Reach Out To This, Bastards

I'm also (along with Josh Marshall) not often a huge fan of Maureen Dowd, but this one, I like.

Does anyone seriously expect us to try to come together with people like these?

Tom Coburn, the new senator from Oklahoma, has advocated the death penalty for doctors who perform abortions and warned that "the gay agenda" would undermine the country. He also characterized his race as a choice between "good and evil" and said he had heard there was "rampant lesbianism" in Oklahoma schools.

Jim DeMint, the new senator from South Carolina, said during his campaign that he supported a state G.O.P. platform plank banning gays from teaching in public schools. He explained, "I would have given the same answer when asked if a single woman who was pregnant and living with her boyfriend should be hired to teach my third-grade children."

John Thune, who toppled Tom Daschle, is an anti-abortion Christian conservative - or "servant leader," as he was hailed in a campaign ad - who supports constitutional amendments banning flag burning and gay marriage.

Don't kid yourselves. These people mean to completely remake America as a conservative , even fundamentalist, Christian state.

These crazy ass fundamentalist so-called christians are really pissing me off and scaring the hell out of me at the same time. As a very liberal Episcopalian who is pro-choice and embrace gay marriage (or the "religious-left"), I am very angry at these zealous for highjacking the religion and tainting the image of many of us. This insanity need to be stopped!!

What about the sickening irony that people with "faith" and "moral values" are so willing to steal an election and do whatever it takes to sta in power? True faith would have been to let every vote count!

Is anything serious being done to at least try to have some of the truth of the election come out?

Couldn't registered democrats who voted in critical precincts be asked to sign affidavits describing their vote and have those numbers compared to the "offcial" total?

This strikes me as an important enough issue regarding our democracry that should have close to 50 million people willing to spend some $ for an effective investigation...

The good news about Coburn is that he's just crazy enough to buck the party line. Remember, aside from being a right-wing nut on "moral" issues, he is also, less offensively, a right-wing nut on fiscal issues, which puts him squarely at odds with the Cut-Taxes-And-Spend Bushies. This is the guy who drew blood from Newt and the Gang when he accused them, in print, of gross financial negligence and budgetary irresponsibility. Sound familiar?

Besides agreeing with everything here, I just wanted to say I'm so glad I ran into your website. I was feeling completely miserable after our dark day on Wednesday, but reading your opinion and other people's comments, I had a small flicker of hope. Perhaps I won't have to move to Toronto after all (which is how I felt Wednesday), if we keep up the fight against intolerance. I just feel sad that the country is bringing together church and state, when that is exactly what we were trying to flee over 200 years ago. I agree with Kevin's first comment of being pissed off and frightened at the same time.
