All this doesn't add up. Even given the administration's penchant for power and secrecy, the FISA court offers them a lot of flexibility legally, which they wouldn't route around unless there was a "good" reason. There must be something else going on here -- I'm thinking some new type of eavesdropping where they're recording every single international call and running it through software to find "conversations of interest." No court would grant a blanket warrant like that (with good reason) so W and Co felt compelled to set themselves up for impeachment. That's my current theory.

Yes, exactly. There must be some reason they wanted no one to know who they were spying on. Another theory going around is that they were eavesdropping on journalists, and they knew the courts wouldn't allow that. When they say people who have "known links to Al-Qaeda" that could and does include many members of the American press. They have contacts, sources, but that doesn't mean they're terrorists.
